Okanogan-Wenatchee National Forest is seeking feedback on an action plan for the future management of developed recreation sites, including campgrounds, trailheads, and rental cabins. Through the Recreation Facility Analysis (RFA) process, the Forest has drafted a “Proposed Program of Work,” outlining possible management actions for 359 sites over the next five years.
“As in so many places, operating budgets have been flat or are declining while operating costs have been increasing”, said Becki Heath, Okanogan-Wenatchee National Forest Supervisor. “Recreation use has been on the rise, yet the decades old facilities are aging. Many are in need of basic maintenance or improvements.”
Implementation of the Proposed Program of Work could reduce annual operation and maintenance costs on the Forest 20% by taking actions such as adjusting operating seasons, repairing some facilities scheduled for replacement, and changing the size of some recreation sites.
“Our aim with RFA is to create a sustainable recreation program, eliminate facility maintenance backlog and meet the needs and expectations of our visitors”, said Heath. “The ideas and information we receive from the public will help us fine tune and prioritize the tasks to meet those needs.”
The Forest intends to finalize the Proposed Program of Work by June 30, 2008, though it may be updated as needed. To be most helpful, comments should be submitted in writing through by June 9.
