Okanogan Friends of Music will present “Unabashedly Classical,” a vocal recital featuring tenor Stephen Cockfield and baritone Joel Yelland. The concert will be Sunday, March 7, at 4 o’clock p.m. at the Omak Presbyterian Church, Central and South Birch in Omak. Admission is by donation.

The program will include virtuoso selections from the 17th through 20th centuries. The vocalists will be joined by Nora Ridenour and Mary Koch on harpsichord and piano; Gail Ridenour on oboe, and Grace Yelland on flute. All the performers are members of the Okanogan Valley Orchestra and Chorus.

Cockfield learned to play several instruments by the time he graduated from high school in Pennsylvania. He concentrated on oboe and bassoon, playing in community orchestras and accompanying Broadway musicals. He continued playing oboe in college with the Penn State Concert Blue Band. He studied briefly with the principal oboist of the Pittsburgh Symphony. Cockfield has a doctorate in entomology and owns his own business as an orchard consultant.

Yelland, a physician, studied vocal performance at Central Washington University as an undergraduate. He took time away from music for travel, medical school and military service. Since moving to the Okanogan Valley in 1996, he has performed in numerous stage productions at the Omak Performing Arts Center. He is lead percussionist with the Okanogan Valley Orchestra and will play the role of Frank Butler in the upcoming production of “Annie Get Your Gun” at the Omak PAC in May.
