The Okanogan Conservation District held its annual Cooperator Appreciation Banquet on Monday, March 1st. Over 60 people attended the event held at The Okanogan Bakery located in the Old Flour Mill in Okanogan.
The District is celebrating 70 years of providing voluntary, non-regulatory conservation assistance to cooperators in Okanogan County. Craig Nelson, District Manager, reviewed the highlights of work the District completed in 2009 to the banquet attendees. “We are really excited about the work we have done with local residents that included providing over $120,000 in cost-share to install conservation practices in 2009”, Nelson said. He noted that each project required cooperators to use their own time, equipment, supplies, and in many cases money to cover their share of each project.
Honored at the banquet as the Okanogan Conservation District’s 2009 Cooperator of the Year were the Legacy Park Volunteers of Tonasket. These dedicated volunteers have been working to create a park in Tonasket to honor veterans. They contacted the Conservation District to help with an irrigation plan and native plantings for the park.
Even after the money ran out, they continued to work tirelessly, and removed many invasive elm trees. The Okanogan Conservation District is proud to have worked with such dedicated stewards of the land.
