The Okanogan County Sheriff’s office has released the names of the deputies involved in the shooting incident near Havillah on Saturday night.
Sheriff Frank Rogers said the deputies on scene were Sgt. Tracy Harrison and Deputy Kevin Newport.
Rogers said, on the night of the incident, Sgt. Harrison and Deputy Newport arrived at the residence and positioned themselves in different areas. They then had Okanogan County Dispatch call Landis and talk to him. He said, “Landis came outside and began talking with Sgt. Harrison who was parked at the bottom of the driveway. Landis then became agitated and went back into the residence and returned with a rifle. Rogers said. Landis was on the phone with Dispatch during this entire time. The Sheriff said, “Landis then began firing several rounds from the rifle into Sgt. Harrison’s vehicle as he was attempting to back down the driveway.” The first shots were fired at approximately 9:00 PM.
Sgt. Harrison pulled his vehicle out and back to another location and then exited his vehicle and entered into a field near the residence. Landis left his residence, crossed the field and went to the area the Deputies had staged.
Landis then fired several more rounds into Sgt. Harrison’s patrol vehicle, striking the hood, driver’s door and both side windows into the driver’s area. Rogers said, Landis was using a .223 caliber rifle and a 45 caliber pistol during the attack.
He said, Sgt. Harrison fired one round from his duty revolver striking Landis and ending the threat.
Neither Sgt. Harrison nor Deputy Newport were injured in the incident. Landis received a wound to his hip and is still in the hospital where he will remain for approximately a week. The Sheriff said, “Once released, he will be brought back to Okanogan County for charging.”
The wife of the suspect who was run over by the tractor was Mary L. Landis, 63, she was transported to the hospital with her injures but has been released.
