CLIMBER KILLED RAPPELLING ON LIBERTY BELL MOUNTAIN

Sep 08, 2014

An Everett man was killed in a rappelling accident on Liberty Bell Mountain over the weekend.

Okanogan County Sheriff Frank Rogers said, 28-year-old Erick Anderson was climbing in the area with his wife when he fell between 50 and 80 feet.

Rogers said his office was called about 7:55pm Saturday night.  He said, Aero Methow Rescue personnel and the Sheriff’s Office responded to the area.  Anderson was pronounced dead at the scene but, Rogers said, “because of the area and darkness it was decided not to try and remove him at night.” He said the next morning Snohomish County Sheriff's Office responded with their helicopter and hoisted Anderson’s body from the scene.

Rogers said “It appears that while Anderson was rappelling off the side of the mountain one of his ropes came free he fell.”
