Crews Make Progress on North Cascades Highway

Apr 08, 2014

Department of Transportation officials say at the end of the first week of clearing,
East side crews had progressed 10 miles to Lone Fir Campground at MP 168.

DOT Spokesman Jeff Adamson said West side crews had progressed 14 miles to Granite Creek as well.

Adamson said with recent milder weather, snow depth has already dwindled  from 10 feet to 7 feet deep early this week at the 5,476-foot-elevation Washington Pass.  But, he said, snow on the highway by the Liberty Bell avalanche chutes  averaged 35 feet deep.

It has taken about 6 weeks to reopen in recent comparable years, so the estimate is still mid-May.
