Aug 16, 2011

Forest Service firefighters responded to two small fires in on National Forest Land in Okanogan County yesterday. Both fires were caused by last week's lightning.

The Methow Valley Ranger District's fire crew and 8 Smokejumpers responded to a one acre fire southwest of Carlton. The fire was on a ridgetop near the head of Smith Canyon.

To the northeast, on the Tonasket Ranger District firefighters and engines responded to a fire in the Nicholson Creek drainage. This fire was less than one acre and was contained yesterday.

While some fires caused by lightning are immediately visible, others can take several days to put up enough smoke to be noticed. Firefighter patrols, fire lookouts, aerial reconnaissance, and reports from citizens are all helping to find the fires.

To report a fire, please call 911 or 1-800-258-5990.
