Sen. Bob Morton, R-Kettle Falls, was chosen as "2011 Legislator of the Year" for Region V by the Washington Association of Agriculture Educators (WAAE).

Morton received the award at the Northeast Washington Fair Grounds in Colville on Sept. 1.

The WAAE is dedicated to promoting the importance of agriculture as a vital industry in the state and recognizes legislators who support agriculture education as an essential element in Washington's public schools.

Washington's public school students in agriculture, food and natural resources classes learn and practice skills to prepare them for post-high school apprenticeships, two-year college programs, and four-year college and graduate programs.

"I am honored by this recognition," Morton said. "Growing food is as much science as it is hard work."
