Multiple Fires Burning in the Methow Valley

Dry, windy conditions allowed several fires on the Methow Valley Ranger District to grow substantially Friday. Evacuations were advised for the Black Canyon and Squaw Creek area Friday afternoon by Okanogan County Emergency Management. All available resources were deployed to all fires possible.

Currently known fires on the Methow Valley Ranger District.

  • Black Canyon Fire is burning about 6 miles southwest of the community of Methow; it is now 2,000 acres in size and zero percent contained.  Black Canyon Forest Road No. 4010 is closed from its junction with Hwy 153. 8020 is closed from 4340 – 600 road at the top of Gold Creek to the 8140 road at the top of Antoine Creek.  Resources on the fire include one engine and a 20 person crew.  The fire is spreading rapidly in timber, brush and grass.
  • South Fork Fire in the gold Creek drainage 7 miles south of Carlton is a quarter acre in size; it is contained and is being mopped up.
  • Starvation Mountain Fire 15 miles northeast of Twisp is burning in timber in steep terrain. 
  • Tatie Peak Fire about 20 miles northwest of Mazama.  Size is more than 100 acres. Jumpers and one hand crew staffing.
  • Cutthroat Fire and a small spot fire 9 miles west of Mazama are both contained – patrol status.
  • Squaw Creek Fire 20 miles south of Twisp. Crews withdrawn due to unsafe conditions.
  • Eagle Creek Fire – 13 miles west of Twisp. Less than 1 acre.
  • Bear Mountain Fire – 10 miles northeast of Twisp.
  • Beaver Mountain – 16 miles ne Twisp.  50-70 acres earlier in the day and growing.
  • Crater Mountain – near Ross Lake. Reconnaissance planned.

Hart’s Pass Road is closed due to fire activity on the Tatie Peak fire

The Pacific Crest Trail is closed between Glacier Pass and Woody Pass.

Squaw Creek Road is closed at the Forest Boundary

McFarland Creek Road is closed at the Forest Boundary

Black Canyon Road is closed at the Forest Boundary

Cooper Mountain Road is closed between Antoine Creek and Gold Creek.
