Newby Lake Fire Update 7/3

Jul 03, 2015

Newby Lake wildfire, in Canada and the Pasayten Wilderness, is estimated at about 290 acres.  The portion of the fire in the United States is on the North Face of Arnold Peak.

Fuel along the southern perimeter of the fire is minimal, mostly sparse green grass.  As the fire moves into this spotty vegetation, it has been extinguishing itself.  Unless northerly winds push the fire, growth to the south should be minimal.

Weather predictions include winds out of the north and northwest tonight through Saturday.  Gusts of about 25 miles per hour are predicted for Saturday.

Much of today’s operation will focus on deterring fire growth to the east where vegetation is more plentiful and on establishing an anchor point to begin mop-up.

An area closure is in place for the northern three miles of Pasayten Wilderness from its eastern boundary to the Haig Mountain area.  Hikers inside the closure area are being advised.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation; however, it is suspected to be lightning caused.

US Forest Service is working closely with our partners at BC Wildfire Service and Washington State Department of Natural Resources to coordinate wildfire response and public information.  Additional information about the Newby Lake fire is at www.bcwildfire.ca.
