Newby Lake Fire, northwest of Loomis Washington, was putting up some smoke again on Thursday.
According to Incident Commander Krissy Vance, there was active burning well within the fire perimeter on the west side of an unburned island of fuel. The vegetation between that island and the fire perimeter has been burned and at this point the fire is not threatening to move beyond the burned area.
Firefighters will continue to patrol the Newby Lake Fire. The weather forecast is for even higher temperatures today, so increased fire activity and visible smoke are again likely.
With so many fire weakened snags between the fire perimeter and the unburned island, it is unsafe to send firefighters in to suppress fire burning well within its boundaries.
The National Forest area closure associated with the Newby Lake Fire has been lifted and replaced with a trail closure. Trail 340, the Long Draw Trail is closed and a temporary re-route is available. The detailed closure description and a map are available on Facebook at www.facebook.com/NewbyLakeWAFire or online at http://inciweb.nwcg.gov/incident/4355/ .
