North Cascades Highway Closed for the season

The North Cascades Highway, SR 20, has been closed for the season.

Tuesday, avalanche and maintenance crews found potentially unstable avalanche chutes and snowslides over the highway. Officials say the largest slide was below Liberty Bell Mountain, measuring 150 feet wide and 12 feet deep.

Officials have determined it is not safe to attempt to reopen the pass following the temporary closure Sunday.

The highway closes every winter due to avalanche danger. It closed last winter on November 19th.
