On September 29 at 10am Omak Police Department, Okanogan County Community Coalition, and the City of Omak will hold a ribbon cutting ceremony at Omak Police Department for the unveiling of Okanogan County's first permanent prescription drug drop off site.

The outdoor drop off slot is located on the North side of the Police Department building and accessible 24 hours a day 7 days a week. A sign posted above the slot describes the types of items that can and can not be returned.

Today prescription drugs are the second most abused category of drugs after marijuana, with 1 in 5 young adults reporting they have abused a prescription drug. From 2008 to 2012 Okanogan County has seen a 93% increase in tenth grade prescription drug abuse, according to the Washington State Healthy Youth Survey.

Medicines that languish in home cabinets are highly susceptible to diversion, misuse, and abuse. Studies show that a majority of abused prescription drugs are obtained from family and friends, including from the home medicine cabinet. In addition, Americans are now advised that their usual methods for disposing of unused medicines--flushing them down the toilet or throwing them in the trash--both pose potential safety and health hazards.
A safe and easy way to decrease youth access to prescription drugs is to properly dispose of any unused or expired medications. Now with the permanent site at the Omak Police Department this has become very easy. Also, you can store medication in your home in a prescription drug lock box. The City of Omak has lock boxes available for free to community members, limit one per household.

In addition to the ribbon cutting ceremony Omak Police Department, Okanogan County Community Coalition, and the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) will give the public another opportunity to prevent pill abuse and theft by ridding their homes of potentially dangerous expired, unused, and unwanted prescription drugs. Bring your medications for disposal to the Wal Mart parking lot at 902 Engh Road in Omak from 10:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. September 29th.
