Recount Required in Commissioners Race

With all the ballots counted, over 17,000 of them, the race for the Okanogan County Commission District 2 is still a dead heat.

On Friday afternoon the final count was issued showing incumbent Don R. "Bud" Hover trailed challenger Ray Campbell by only eight votes.

Hover, with 7,176 votes to Campbell's 7,184. Hover had trailed by five votes in the totals released Wednesday.

With the results, the race now must go through a recount as required by law. Mila Jury, Chief Elections Deputy at the Okanogan County Auditor's Office says because the margin is less than quarter of one percent, or less than 150 votes they will have to do a hand recount.

Jury said the first thing they have to do is certify the election results on November 27, 2012. Then, she said, they Canvassing Board will set a date and time for the hand recount.

Jury explained the process saying they will have two teams of two people. They will have to sort all of the ballots by precinct then count them, putting votes for Campbell in one pile and Hover in another pile and any other write in's in a separate pile. She said they will then enter all that information into a spreadsheet and come up with the total.

Jury said she did not know how long the recount process would take. She said, "I know they can't do it in a day, but I don't know how long." Jury said this is very important, so "we want to take our time and do it right."
