TONASKET MAN KILLED IN ACCIDENT ON HWY 7

A Tonasket man was killed in a one vehicle accident early Saturday on Highway 7 near Oroville.

Okanogan County Sheriff Frank Rogers said his office was notified of the accident around 6:45 am by a resident at the property reported a vehicle in his field.

The driver, 53-year-old Fred W. Cook, of Tonasket was pronounced dead at the scene. Cook was driving a 1972 Fiat 124 at the time of the accident.

Rogers said, “It appears the vehicle was traveling southbound on Hwy 7 near mile post 17.67, when the vehicle's passenger side tires left the pavement and entered the gravel shoulder.”  He said the driver attempted to over correct his steering and entered back into the South bound lane of travel and then slid sideways, leaving the roadway and into the field.  He said, The vehicle traveled down a small embankment, through a barbwire fence and then began to roll.

Rogers said investigators believe alcohol may have been a factor in the accident.
