Townsend elected to Farm Service Agency Committee

Feb 20, 2014

Ed Townsend, of Okanogan, has recently been elected to the Farm Service Agency Okanogan County Committee. He will help direct and implement federal farm programs for the next three years.

“The County Committee system is unique in the federal government,” said Gary Breiler, Okanogan County County Executive Director. “Mr. Townsend is going to be a local voice for farmers and ranchers.”

The three-person committee is the place that producers can appeal most agency decisions. Committees also make decisions helping to determine program payments. The committee meets approximately eight times a year.

The committee has a hand in all of FSA’s programs. These include insurance-like programs, Non-Insured Crop Disaster Assistance Program; conservation program activity; and disaster relief programs that might deal with issues like lack of forage for grazing or loss of animals.

Jo Ann Kramer, of Okanogan has agreed to serve as an alternate.

The next meeting of the Okanogan County Committee is scheduled for February 27th, at 10:00 a.m. in the conference room located at the Okanogan USDA Service Center.  For more information about county committees and the election process, please contact this office or visit www.fsa.usda.gov/wa.
