Tribal Members pass marijuana referendum

Jun 26, 2015

The Colville Business Council’s Elections Committee certified referendum votes late last week indicating that the membership of the Colville Tribes is interested in having the Tribal government start looking at options for legalized marijuana on the Reservation.

In an overall vote of 1044 for, 866 against, Tribal members in each of the Reservations’ four districts supported the idea.

In April, the CBC voted to put the issue out for referendum prior to expending time and resources on an issue that seemed relatively balanced in terms of support for each side.  “We always have a lot of work to do, as a Tribe, on a wide range of issues” Tribal Chairman Jim Boyd said today.  “On this issue, an in-depth and wide ranging array of options need to be explored, and we really wanted to know if this is something that the membership wanted before we dove in.  Now we know” he added.

The Colville Tribes will now begin the process of exploring options and making decision as to what direction they will move.  Discussions on code revisions and business opportunities have already commenced.  “Now the work starts”, Boyd concluded.
