Wenatchee Valley College at Omak presents 13th Annual Omak Film Festival

Wenatchee Valley College at Omak student government has partnered with Omak Theatre to present the 13th Annual Omak Film Festival from Feb. 18 to March 10. The films being featured include Spotlight, Brooklyn, The Big Short, Trumbo, The Danish Girl and Room.

The goal of the partnership is to bring films that would not make it to the Okanogan—films that are riveting, captivating, educational and entertaining, said Livia Millard, WVC at Omak multicultural coordinator.

Spotlight (R) will play Feb. 18 to 20. The film features Michael Keaton, Mark Ruffalo and Rachel McAdams. When Boston Globe reporters explore allegations of abuse in the Catholic Church, their investigation uncovers the massive scandal of child molestation and cover-up within the local Catholic Archdiocese, shaking the entire Catholic Church to its core.

Brooklyn (PG-13) will play Feb. 21 to 24. Saoirse Ronan and Emory Cohen, Domnhall Gleeson star in this drama/romance that takes place in 1950s Brooklyn, where an Irish immigrant falls into a romance with a local. When her past catches up with her, however, she must choose between two countries and the lives that exist within.

The Big Short (R) will play Feb. 25 to 27. The film, featuring Christian Bale, Steve Carell, Brad Pitt and Ryan Gosling, focuses on the housing collapse of the mid-2000s and how four denizens in the world of high finance predicted the collapse and decided to take on the big banks for their greed and lack of foresight.

Trumbo (R) will play Feb. 28 to March 2. This biography/drama features Bryan Cranston as Dalton Trumbo, who, in 1947, was Hollywood’s top screenwriter until he and other artists were jailed and blacklisted for their political beliefs. The film recounts how Trumbo used words and wit to win two Academy Awards and expose the absurdity and injustice under the blacklist. Trumbo also features Diane Lane as Cleo Trumbo, Michael Stuhlbarg as Edward G. Robinson, Helen Mirren as gossip columnist Hedda Hopper, David James Elliott as John Wayne, Dean O’Gorman as Kirk Douglas, Christian Berkel as Otto Preminger and Rick Kelly as John F. Kennedy.

The Danish Girl (R) will play March 3 to 5. Featuring Alicia Vikander as Danish artist Gerda Wegener and Eddie Redmayne as Lili Elbe, a transgender pioneer, the film is a fictitious love story loosely inspired by the lives of Elbe and Wegener, and how their marriage and work evolve as they navigate Lili’s groundbreaking journey.

Room (R) will play March 6 to 10. Brie Larson and Jacob Tremblay star in this drama based on the novel by Emma Donoghue. After five-year-old Jack and his mother escape from the 10 ft.-by-10 ft. world that Jack has known his entire life, Jack makes a discovery about the real world beyond Room.

Admission is $9 for adults and $6.40 for children under 11. Discount matinees are $6.50 for all ages. A festival season pass is $36 and is good for one admission to each of the six films. WVC at Omak students with current student ID will be admitted free with one guest to the films.
