WOODCUTTER KILLED BY TREE

Sep 15, 2014

A 61-year-old Oroville man died Friday when a tree fell on him on a wood cutting trip.

Okanogan County Sheriff Frank Rogers said Jerry Rounds was cutting wood with a friend off Forest Service road 3525, when a tree fell on him.  The Sheriff’s office was called to the scene around 2:50pm.

Rogers said, when his Deputy arrived he found Rounds still alive but in bad shape. The Sheriff said, “It appears Rounds friend was cutting the tree down and Rounds was putting a wedge in so that the tree would fall up hill.”

He said, “According to Rounds friend, as the tree began to fall Rounds reached in and pulled the wedge out. Rounds’ dog then ran to where the tree was falling. Rounds ran for the dog and as the tree fell it missed the dog but landed on Rounds.”

The friend ran to call for help. Rogers said shortly after Deputy Josh Petker arrived, Rounds stopped breathing so Deputy Petker began CPR on Rounds until the ambulance arrived. The Sheriff said, “When the ambulance arrived they tried to revive Rounds but were unsuccessful.” Rounds died at the scene from the injuries he received.
