The Coroner’s office has released the identity of the man who fell to his death while climbing near Mazama on Monday.
20-year-old Shelby Withington of Bellingham man fell during a rappel off Goat Wall.
Okanogan County Coroner Dave Rodriguez said Withington, who was a member of WWU’s climbing team, was climbing with three other young men at about 9:15 a.m. when he fell about 500 feet.
Okanogan County search and rescue crews climbed into the spot and met a Navy helicopter out of Whidbey Island Naval Station, which helped retrieve the young man’s body.
Rodriguez said the cause of the fall has been investigated and determined to be 'climber error.'
