Commission will meet to consider hunting rules for upcoming season

Mar 31, 2016

The Washington Fish and Wildlife Commission is scheduled to take action on proposed changes to state hunting rules for deer, elk, bear, cougar and other game species during a public meeting April 8-9 in Olympia.

The commission, a citizen panel appointed by the governor to set policy for the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife (WDFW), will convene in Room 172 of the Natural Resources Building, 1111 Washington St. S.E., in Olympia.

The meeting is scheduled to begin at 8 a.m. both days. A complete agenda is available at http://wdfw.wa.gov/commission/

Most of the proposals address changes in special permit levels and other issues that were not included in the broader 2015-17 hunting rules approved last April by the commission.

However, at the commission’s request, two proposals included in that plan are again up for consideration. One relates to cougar-hunting seasons and the other to the use of bait when hunting deer and elk.

The proposed changes to state hunting regulations are available for public review at http://wdfw.wa.gov/hunting/regulations/seasonsetting/

The commission will also review the protected status of brown pelicans.

In other business, the commission will consider two land transactions proposed by WDFW. One would accept the transfer of 33 acres from the state Department of Transportation to WDFW’s Mount St. Helens Wildlife Area. The other would grant an access easement to the Port of Grays Harbor, allowing public access to the port’s property known as Sterling Landing on the Wynoochee River.

WDFW staff will also brief the commission on the results of last year’s crab and shrimp fisheries in Puget Sound, and on methods of controlling Japanese eelgrass and ghost shrimp in Willapa Bay.
