Dems, education leaders to sue over WA tax limits

A dozen Democratic lawmakers are joining Washington education groups in suing to challenge the state's rules requiring a two-thirds majority in the Legislature to raise taxes.

State Rep. Jamie Pederson said the lawsuit to be filed Monday will be led by the League of Education Voters and the Washington Education Association.

The two-thirds majority rule was part of a Tim Eyman initiative that voters approved last year. Because Republicans vowed not to raise taxes, the law forced state lawmakers to balance this year's budget with heavy cuts to education.

Pederson says the law unconstitutionally infringes on the power of the Legislature to pass laws. He also says it prevents the state from fulfilling its constitutional obligations to adequately fund education. The lawsuit will be filed in King County.
