Caribou Trail League Well Represented at State Tennis

Caribou Trail League tennis players performed exceptionally well at this year’s State 1B/2B/1A Tennis Tournament in Yakima. The league boasts two state champions, two second place finishers and all of the players finished within the top seven.

Okanogan’s boys doubles team of Max Cheeseman / Jay Nearents won the state championship, defeating the University Prep team of Jasen Mansfield / Christian Keaunui 6-2, 7-6 (7-5).  Cheeseman / Nearents had cruised through their first round match defeating the Zillah team in straight sets, 6-1, 6-3. They took out the other University Prep team in the second round winning 3-6, 6-3, 6-2, before defeating the Charles Wright Academy team in the semi-finals, 6-1, 6-2.

The Okanogan girls doubles team of Shelby Walker / Megan Patrick brought home the second place medal after falling in a tough three set battle with Amanda Lin / Maria Russinovich of Overlake. Overlake won the finals 6-2, 2-6, 6-4.

Walker / Patrick had won all of their earlier rounds in straight sets, taking out Colville in the first round 6-0, 6-3, LaSalle in the second 6-1, 7-5 and defeating the Forest Ridge team of He / Hines 6-4, 6-2 in the semi-finals.

Omak’s girls doubles team of Alex O’Dell / Jennifer O’Dell brought home the sixth place medal after losing the 3rd/6th place match to the He / Hines of Forest Ridge. The O’Dell cousins had beat Lakeside and the team from Charles Wright Academy, but lost to the eventual state champions in the semi-finals.

Cashmere’s Paiton Wagner won the girls singles state championship easily defeating Penelope Owen of Seattle Academy 6-0, 6-1 in the finals.

Also in girls singles, Aleah Kert of Cashmere took home the fourth place medal beating Bailee Wallace of Three Rivers Christian 6-0, 6-1.  Taylor Kelly of Cascade brought home fifth place defeating Mechelle Bussey of Naches Valley 6-0, 6-1.

In boys singles, Tyler Kert of Cashmere placed second after losing in the championship match to Jack Katzman of University Prep. Chelan’s Byrce Robison finished in seventh place.

Chelan had two boys doubles teams at state this year.  Micah Larson / Collin Hendricks brought home the fifth place medal defeating LaSalle in three sets.  Henry Elsner /  Rylan Anderson of Chelan placed sixth.

Also from District 6, out of the NCW B League, Tonasket’s Caleb Hardesty took fifth place in boys singles, and the girls doubles team of Mandi Wilson / Johnna Terris, placed eigth.
