District Six Tennis Tournament Held in Omak Saturday

It was a full day of tennis in Omak Saturday as the District 6 tournament got underway. Teams from 12 schools competed in the first three rounds of the tournament to determine who from the district will move on to the State Tournament in Yakima Memorial Day weekend.

On the girl's side, in singles the number one seed Shaylyn Goodall of Omak cruised to the semi-finals, beating Cascades's Lisa Witowski 6-0, 6-0 in the quarter finals. Goodall had a bye in the first round and took out Okanogan's Jazmin Salgado 6-0, 6-0 in the second. Next Satuday, Goodall will take on Chelan's Emma Palumbo in the Semi-Finals. Palumbo earned her spot in the semi's beating Okanogan's Li Ling Yu in the first round and Tonasket's Clare Thornton in three sets in the second round, 4-6, 6-3, 7-5. In the Quarter finals, Palumbo beat Cashmere's Molly Kenoyer 6-2, 6-2.

The second semi-final match next Saturday on the girl's side will feature Heather Poppie of Chelan and Noelle Parton of Cascade.

Tonasket's Michelle Timmerman will face Chelan's McKenna Hawkins in the consolation semi-finals. Timmerman beat Liberty Bell's Larkin Hubrig 6-0, 6-1 in the first round, Cashmere's Megan Turner 6-3, 6-2 in the second, before falling to Poppie in the quarter finals.

On the boy's side in singles action, the number on seed Manuel Perez of Liberty Bell took out Omak's Matt Pearce 6-0, 6-0 in the second round. Pearce made it to the second round of the single elimination portion of the tournament by beating Entiat's Kyle Montgommery 6-0, 6-1 in the first round. LB's Perez, who had a bye in the first round, earned his place in the semi's taking out Cashmere's Chad Raven 6-0, 6-2 in the quarter finals. Raven, who will play in next week's consolation semi-finals, found himself
facing Perez after taking out Okanogan's Nathan Linklater 6-4, 6-3 in the second round. Perez will face Tonasket's
Anthony Verhasselt in the semi-finals next week.
Verhasselt took out Jaden Smiley of Chelan in three sets, and had the late night match-up with Cashmere's Warren Robertson that went three sets and finished up under the lights at North Cascades Athletic Club well past 9pm.

The second semi-final match for the boys next week will feature Matt Robinson of Chelan and Brian Norwood of Cashmere. Norwood beat Omak's Greg Sklar in three sets in quarter final action, 4-6, 6-3, 6-1. Sklar, who will face Lake Roosevelt's Phoenix Shepard in the consolation semi-finals next week, earned his way to quarter finals by taking out Okanogan's Tom Lommasson in the first round and Liberty Bell's Carlos Perez in the second. Shepard earned his spot by taking out Liberty Bell's Josh Frey 6-0, 6-1 in the first round. Shepard's second round opponent, White Swan's Xavier Valladares took an injury default at 3-3 in the third set.

In doubles, on the girl's side, the number one seed out of Cashmere, the team of Kowatsch (pronounced Co-Vatch) and Kowatsch cruised into the semi-finals with a 6-0, 6-0 victory in the quarter finals over Omak's LaGrou and Martinez. Earlier in the day they took out Liberty Bell's Smith and King in straight sets. Kowatsch and Kowatsch will meet Chelan's DePaoli and Robinson next Saturday.

Omak's LaGrou and Martinez will face Dominguez and Purtell of Liberty Bell in the consolation semi-finals next week.
The second semi-final match will see Tonasket's Beyers and Monroe taking on Chelan's Plew and Courtney. Beyers and Monroe took out Lake Roosevelt's Carriere and Williams earlier in the day and faced Cashmere's O'Bryan and Spanjer in the quarterfinals. O'Bryan and Spanjer had taken out Omak's Goodall and Love in the first round and Tonasket's Renald and Newton in the second. They will face the team of Brammer and Reyes of Brewster/Pateros, in the consolation semi-finals.

In boy's doubles, the number one seed, Entiat's Murillo and Davis took out Cashmere's Taylor and Weaver in the quarter finals 6-4, 6-4. Taylor and Weaver knocked off Omak's Smith and Hack in straight sets in the first round and Tonasket's Detillan and Knowlton in the second. Murillo and Davis will face Chelan's Arechiga and Sloan, who beat Omak's O'Dell and Law in the quarter finals following a marathon second round match against Tonasket's Hendrick and Terris. O'Dell and Law who took out Liberty Bell's Sonnichsen and Klemmeck 6-2, 6-4 to get to the quarter finals, will face Taylor and Weaver in the consolation semi-finals.

The second semi-final match in boy's doubles will see Cashmere's Sites and Ross taking on Okanogan's Hertlein and Behrens. Hertlein and Behrens came into the tournament as the number two seed, giving them a first round bye. In the second round they took out Tonasket's Leep and Marks 6-0, 6-0, then beat Omak's Riggle and Layton 6-2, 6-1 in the quarter finals. Riggle and Layton will face Chelan's Rosas and Morrison in the consolation semi-finals.

The District 6 semi-finals will be played at the North Cascades Athletic club beginning at 11am next Saturday May 19th. The consolation semi's will be played at Omak High School. The top four finishers on the boy's side and the top three on the girl's side will head to the State Tournament in Yakima on May 25th & 26th.
