Tournament MVP Kara Staggs scored a game-high 21 points, leading Okanogan to a 44-36 upset victory over Freeman on Saturday to claim the Class 1A girls state basketball championship.

Caitlyn Behymer added eight points and Tyler Schreckengost seven for the Bulldogs (23-5), who earned their first title while denying the Scotties (27-2) their third title in a row.

Okanogan took the lead for good late in the first quarter but could never fully shake Freeman. The Bulldogs led by as many as 10 in the first half, but the Scotties managed to stay within six points until Staggs' two free throws with 6 seconds left.

Okanogan shot 38 percent (16 of 42) in the game, but Freeman made just 28 percent (12 of 43) of its shots. Staggs made 6 of 14 field goal attempts, including 2 of 8 3-pointers.

Schreckengost pulled down 11 rebounds as Okanogan outrebounded Freeman 40-27.
